Researchers gave healthy but obese men one of two “high protein” diets. Protein was kept to 30% of total calories in both diets, but the amount of carbohydrate and fat was varied. In the first diet—which they called “low carbohydrate”—the carbohydrate content was kept to a very low 4%, with the rest of the calories coming from fat. In the second diet—which they called “moderate carbohydrate”—the carbohydrate content was kept to 35%, with the rest coming from fat.
“There is so much crap that people have in their diet that is just out of habit,” he says. “Try to reduce or cut out soda, sugar, and junk food. Have a few less beers each week, or drink wine since it typically has fewer calories.” Small changes add up yet don’t feel as overwhelming as overhauling your entire diet. Grabbing a high-calorie sugar-smothered coffee drink or a couple of donuts won't do anything for maintaining your body mass and will probably send you back in the other direction.
